Gates that open, close and latch

A gate is a fence panel that moves, and everything about it is harder than a fixed panel. It hangs off a single post, it gets slammed, it carries its own weight on two hinges, and in Tallahassee's humidity a wood gate can swell and drag within a season. A well-built gate starts with a heavy post set deep, a frame that resists sagging, and hardware sized for the gate's weight.

Gates can be added to an existing fence, replaced when the old one fails, or built as part of a new fence. Drive gates for boats, trailers and RVs, pedestrian gates to the side yard, and self-closing pool gates are all common requests.

Gate types

Single walk gates are usually three to four feet wide. Wider walk gates make it easier to get a mower or wheelbarrow through. Double drive gates run from about ten to sixteen feet across and need a cane bolt or drop rod to hold the inactive leaf. Slide gates suit driveways where there's no room to swing.

Wood gates get a steel frame kit or diagonal bracing to fight sag. Vinyl gates use internal aluminum reinforcement. Aluminum and steel gates are lighter for their strength and hold their shape well. Pool gates have to swing outward from the pool and be self-closing and self-latching under Florida's barrier rules.

Why gates fail in Tallahassee

Most gate trouble comes back to the post. A gate post that isn't set deep enough, or isn't sized for the gate, slowly leans. On Red Hills clay, a post that wasn't properly compacted can rock after a few wet seasons. On sandy ground south of town, the post needs extra depth to get the same hold.

The second cause is the frame. Wood swells in humid weather and shrinks in dry spells, and a gate without a steel frame or proper bracing will drop at the latch side. Fixing it usually means resetting or reinforcing the post, adding a frame kit or anti-sag cable, and re-hanging the gate.

How fence gate installation usually goes

1

Measure the opening

The contractor measures the opening and checks the posts and the ground.

2

Pick gate and hardware

Material, width, swing direction, hinges and latch are chosen for the use.

3

Set or reinforce posts

Gate posts are set deeper or replaced if they're leaning.

4

Hang the gate

The gate is hung square, with clearance at the bottom and a latch that catches.

5

Adjust

Self-closing hinges, drop rods and locks are adjusted and tested.

Fence Gate Installation cost in Tallahassee

Published industry figures put a single walk gate somewhere around $175 to $1,200 installed depending on material, width and hardware, and double drive gates and automated gates cost more. Those are general reference ranges, not our pricing and not a quote.

Repairs are usually priced by the job and depend on whether the post needs resetting or the gate needs a new frame.

Protect yourself with a written scope, a clear payment schedule and your own check of the contractor's license and insurance. Be cautious with large cash deposits or pressure to sign the same day.

Fence Gate Installation questions

Why is my gate sagging?

Usually the hinge-side post is leaning or the gate frame is racking. Fixes include resetting the post, adding a steel frame kit or anti-sag cable, and re-hanging the gate.

How wide should a drive gate be?

Measure the widest vehicle or trailer that needs to pass and add room to maneuver. Many residential double drive gates run ten to sixteen feet.

Can a gate be added to an existing fence?

Yes. The contractor cuts in an opening, sets proper gate posts and hangs a matching gate.

What does a pool gate need?

In Florida, a pool gate has to open outward from the pool and be self-closing and self-latching, with the release out of a young child's reach.

Can a gate be automated later?

Often, if the gate and posts are strong enough. Plan for it when the gate goes in so the posts and power are ready.
