Fencing a Frenchtown lot

Frenchtown sits northwest of downtown Tallahassee, roughly bounded by Tennessee Street to the south, Bronough Street to the east, Seventh Avenue and Alabama Street to the north, and Woodward Avenue to the west. It's close to Florida State, the Capitol and Midtown.

Lots here are generally small and houses sit close together, from older cottages and shotgun-style homes to newer infill. Fence work tends to be short runs with a lot of detail: a privacy fence between two houses, a picket fence out front, a gate that has to fit a narrow side yard, or a secure fence around a rental.

One of Florida's oldest Black communities

Frenchtown's name traces to the 1820s and 1830s, when the Lafayette Land Grant brought French settlers to the area around Tallahassee. After the Civil War, newly freed African Americans settled the low-lying land here, and Frenchtown is widely recognized as the oldest surviving historically Black community of its kind in Florida.

In the early twentieth century it became a hub of Black business and music. Ray Charles lived in Frenchtown in the early 1940s, and the Adderley brothers played here when they were young. The neighborhood declined in the 1960s and 1970s and has been in a long period of reinvestment since, which brings a steady stream of renovation and new construction.

Low ground and tight lots

Frenchtown occupies lower ground than the ridges around it, which was part of why the land was available to settle after the war. Low spots can hold water after a heavy storm, so posts need proper depth and backfill that drains.

Tight lots and alleys mean contractors often dig by hand and carry materials in. On shared lines, a fence that looks finished on both sides keeps things friendly with the neighbors.

Before you hire, confirm any required license and insurance yourself, get the scope and price in writing, and ask who handles permits, HOA approval and the Sunshine 811 utility locate.
