Fences on Killearn's rolling lots

Killearn Estates spreads across northeast Tallahassee between Thomasville Road and Centerville Road, north of I-10. It's a large, established neighborhood of lakes, parks and tree-lined streets, with a golf course near its center and neighborhood parks scattered through it.

Homes here range from 1970s ranches to larger newer builds, many on lots that slope toward a lake, a creek or a fairway. That rolling ground is the defining feature of fence work in Killearn. Very few backyards are flat, and a fence that looks good has to follow the grade without leaving big gaps under the panels.

A planned community from the 1960s

In the 1960s, developer J.T. Williams and his partners began building Killearn on land at the northeast edge of the city. The name comes from a village in Scotland tied to the Maclay family, whose Killearn Gardens estate became what is now Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park.

Killearn Estates was built as a planned community, which is why its streets feel open and uncluttered. The Killearn Homes Association still maintains parks and common areas, and like most planned communities, it has guidelines for what fences can look like.

Slopes, oaks and storm damage

Killearn sits on the Red Hills, where rolling terrain and reddish clay soil are the rule. Clay holds a set post firmly, but it's heavy digging, and on a slope each post has to be set to a consistent height so the fence line stays smooth. Stepped panels or rackable aluminum are the usual answer on steeper yards.

The big oaks and pines that make Killearn attractive are also the main threat to fences. When storms like Hermine in 2016 and the May 2024 tornadoes came through northeast Tallahassee, fallen trees and limbs caused much of the fence damage. Keeping limbs trimmed back from the fence line helps.

We don't check contractors' credentials, so do it yourself before signing: ask for proof of any required license and insurance, confirm it, and get a written scope that spells out materials, post depth, gates and payment terms.

Fence questions from Killearn Estates

Do I need HOA approval for a fence in Killearn Estates?

Most likely. The Killearn Homes Association has guidelines for fences. Submit your plans for approval before the contractor orders material.

How do fences handle Killearn's slopes?

Stepped panels, racked aluminum or wood built to follow the grade. The contractor will suggest the approach for your yard.

Can I fence along the golf course or a lake?

Often with restrictions on height and style that keep views open. Check with the HOA first.

Is the digging hard in Killearn?

Clay soil and tree roots make for slower digging than sandy ground, but clay holds a compacted post well.
