Pool fences and Florida's barrier rules

Florida's Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act, Chapter 515 of the Florida Statutes, sets the baseline for pool barriers. Under section 515.29, a barrier has to be at least four feet high on the outside, can't have gaps or footholds that let a young child crawl under, squeeze through or climb over, and has to surround the pool. Gates that lead to the pool have to open outward, away from the pool, and be self-closing and self-latching.

A new pool has to have at least one approved safety feature to pass final inspection, and a compliant barrier is the most common choice. Many older pools in Tallahassee predate the current rules, and adding a barrier is one of the simplest ways to make a backyard pool safer for visiting kids and grandkids. The Florida Building Code carries its own detailed barrier requirements, and the local building department applies them.

Types of pool fence

Aluminum is the most common permanent pool fence in Tallahassee. It doesn't rust around chlorinated water, keeps the view of the pool open from the house, and can be built with picket spacing and self-closing gates that suit barrier rules. Vinyl picket and some privacy styles also work when their spacing and footholds are right.

Removable mesh pool fencing is a tensioned mesh on poles that sit in sleeves drilled into the deck. It's see-through, can be taken down for parties, and is popular with families with toddlers. It needs to be put back up and latched every time, which is its strength and its weakness.

What contractors typically handle

  • Aluminum pool fencing at four feet and up
  • Removable mesh child-safety pool fence
  • Vinyl picket pool enclosures
  • Self-closing, self-latching pool gates
  • Latch placement out of a child's reach
  • Deck coring for mesh fence sleeves

Pool barrier details that matter

The details are where pool fences fail inspection or fail at their job. The gate has to swing away from the pool and close on its own from any open position. The latch release has to sit on the pool side and out of a young child's reach. Nothing on the outside of the fence, like a planter, an AC unit or a bench, should give a child a step up. Horizontal rails spaced like a ladder on the outside are a problem.

If a wall of the house forms part of the barrier, Florida law adds requirements for the doors and windows that open toward the pool, such as alarms or self-closing, self-latching devices. Every property is laid out differently, so confirm the plan with the contractor and with the City of Tallahassee or Leon County building staff before you build. We don't inspect or certify pool barriers.

How pool fence installation usually goes

1

Plan the enclosure

The contractor maps the barrier around the pool, where gates go, and whether the house wall is part of it.

2

Check requirements

Height, spacing, gate swing and latch height get matched to state and local rules.

3

Install posts or sleeves

Posts are set in the ground or cored into the deck for mesh systems.

4

Install the barrier

Panels or mesh go up with no gaps at the bottom or between sections.

5

Test the gates

Self-closing and self-latching gates are adjusted until they close and latch every time.

Pool Fence Installation cost in Tallahassee

Pool fence pricing depends on the material, the length of the barrier and the number of gates. Aluminum pool fencing tends to fall in the general aluminum range, roughly $25 to $55 per linear foot in published industry figures, with self-closing gate hardware on top. Those are general references, not our pricing and not a quote.

Removable mesh fencing is priced by the linear foot plus deck coring. Pool areas with long curving runs, lots of gates, or a mix of deck and lawn cost more.

Before you hire, confirm any required license and insurance yourself, get the scope and price in writing, and ask who handles permits, HOA approval and the Sunshine 811 utility locate.

What moves the price

  • Barrier length and height
  • Aluminum, vinyl or removable mesh
  • Number of self-closing gates
  • Deck coring versus ground-set posts
  • Removing an old non-compliant fence

Pool Fence Installation questions

How tall does a pool fence have to be in Florida?

Under section 515.29 of the Florida Statutes, a residential pool barrier must be at least four feet high on the outside. Local building codes can add details, so confirm with your building department.

Which way should a pool gate swing?

Outward, away from the pool, and it has to be self-closing with a self-latching device. The latch release goes on the pool side where a young child can't reach it.

Can my backyard fence count as the pool barrier?

It can if the portion around the pool meets the barrier requirements. Otherwise the pool barrier has to be separate from the yard fence.

Is removable mesh fencing allowed?

Mesh pool fencing is widely used and can meet barrier requirements when installed and latched correctly. Confirm the product and layout with the contractor and your local building department.

Do you inspect my pool fence for compliance?

No. We connect you with an independent local contractor. Compliance is confirmed through the contractor and the local building department, not by us.
