What silt fence does

Silt fence is a geotextile fabric stretched between stakes and trenched into the ground along the downhill edge of disturbed soil. When rain runs off a graded site, the fence slows the water and holds back sediment so it settles on the site instead of washing into the street, the storm drain or the nearest lake.

It shows up on new home sites, additions, pool excavations, utility work, land clearing and commercial development. It's temporary. It stays up until the site is stabilized with grass, sod or pavement, and then it comes out.

Installation that actually works

The most common silt fence failure is water running under it. The bottom of the fabric has to be buried in a trench and backfilled, not just laid on top of the ground. Stakes need to be driven deep enough and spaced closely enough to hold the fabric when it's loaded with muddy water.

Silt fence also has to follow the contour of the land and be placed where runoff actually flows. Running it straight up and down a slope doesn't do much. On bigger sites it's combined with inlet protection, construction entrances, and sediment basins.

What contractors typically handle

  • Standard and heavy-duty silt fence
  • Trenching and backfilling the fabric toe
  • Stake spacing sized to the slope
  • Storm drain inlet protection
  • Inspection and repair after storms
  • Removal once the site is stabilized

Erosion control in Tallahassee's lakes and karst

Tallahassee's geography makes sediment control matter. The Red Hills north of town have clay soils that run off fast in a summer downpour, and the red water that comes off a bare lot is hard to miss. South of the Cody Scarp, the Woodville Karst Plain is dotted with sinkholes and springs connected to the aquifer, so what washes into a sink can travel.

Local lakes like Lake Jackson, Lake Lafayette and Lake Iamonia, plus Munson Slough and the streams that feed them, all receive stormwater runoff. Construction sites in the city and county generally need an erosion and sediment control plan, and larger sites fall under state stormwater permitting. The site's plan dictates where silt fence goes.

How silt fence installation usually goes

1

Read the plan

The contractor follows the approved erosion and sediment control plan for the site.

2

Trench the line

A trench is cut along the contour where the fence will run.

3

Set stakes and fabric

Stakes go in at close spacing and the fabric is attached with the toe in the trench.

4

Backfill and compact

The trench is backfilled and compacted so water can't run under the fabric.

5

Maintain and remove

The fence is checked after rain, repaired as needed, and removed once the site is stable.

Silt Fence Installation cost in Tallahassee

Silt fence is priced by the linear foot and is among the lowest per-foot fencing costs, with inlet protection, maintenance visits and removal often priced separately.

Contractors quote from the site plan. Heavy-duty or wire-backed silt fence, difficult access and frequent maintenance visits raise the price.

We don't check contractors' credentials, so do it yourself before signing: ask for proof of any required license and insurance, confirm it, and get a written scope that spells out materials, post depth, gates and payment terms.

What moves the price

  • Linear feet from the site plan
  • Standard or wire-backed fabric
  • Inlet protection and other controls
  • Maintenance frequency
  • Removal at the end of the job

Silt Fence Installation questions

Is silt fence required on my building site?

Construction sites commonly need erosion and sediment control under local and state rules. The approved plan for your site says what's required.

Why does silt fence fail?

The usual reasons are an unburied bottom edge, stakes spaced too far apart, placement across a concentrated flow, or sediment building up without cleanout.

How long does silt fence stay up?

Until the disturbed area is stabilized with vegetation or paving. Then it's removed.

Can silt fence go on a residential lot?

Yes. It's common on new home construction, additions, pool digs and grading work.

Do you write erosion control plans?

No. We connect you with independent local contractors who install silt fence according to your site's plan.
