Fencing south of Tallahassee

Woodville is a census-designated place in south Leon County, a short drive south of Tallahassee along Woodville Highway. About 4,100 people lived there at the 2020 census, up from about 3,000 a decade earlier, and it keeps a small-town, rural feel with larger lots, pasture and woods.

Fence work in Woodville tends toward the practical: chain link and wood for dog yards, board and wire fencing for livestock, privacy fences on newer homes, and gates wide enough for a truck and trailer.

Natural Bridge and the karst plain

About six miles east of Woodville, at Natural Bridge, the St. Marks River drops into a sinkhole and runs underground before reappearing downstream. On March 6, 1865, Confederate troops and local volunteers, including cadets from the school that became Florida State University, held that crossing against a Union force, and Tallahassee remained the only Confederate state capital east of the Mississippi not captured. The site is now Natural Bridge Battlefield Historic State Park.

Woodville sits on the Woodville Karst Plain, a flat, sandy landscape of sinkholes and springs connected to the aquifer that feeds Wakulla Springs to the south.

Sandy soil and storm exposure

South of the Cody Scarp, the red clay gives way to sand. Sandy soil drains fast and doesn't grip a post the way clay does, so posts need more depth and usually concrete to hold a tall fence in wind. Low spots and sinkhole-prone areas deserve a closer look before setting a fence line.

On May 10, 2024, a high-end EF1 tornado passed south of Tallahassee across southern Leon County, leaving widespread tree damage. Well-set posts and open fence styles hold up better when the wind comes through.

Protect yourself with a written scope, a clear payment schedule and your own check of the contractor's license and insurance. Be cautious with large cash deposits or pressure to sign the same day.
